The mission of our laboratory is to conduct research and provide training in the fields of cardiac electrophysiology and Electrocardiology, in an effort to develop better approaches for the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias and sudden death.
Rhythm disorders of the heart claim the lives of more than seven million people worldwide every year. Many more individuals are disabled and suffer from a greatly compromised quality of life. Despite these alarming statistics, the mechanisms of cardiac arrhythmias are not completely understood and treatment is, for the most part, empirical. In addition, a noninvasive imaging modality for identifying patients at risk of sudden death and for arrhythmia diagnosis and guidance of treatment is not yet available for clinical application. It is our premise that the understanding of mechanisms and availability of precise diagnostic tools is imperative to the development of better treatment of arrhythmias and prevention of sudden death.
